A Chorus Line dazzles at premiere.

STARS were made last night as the Australian creation of A Chorus Line premiered at the Festival Theatre.

The 17 lead performers – plucked from 1200 confidents over 21 days of grueling auditions in August – astonished the opening night crowd.

Directed by original 1975 cast member Baayork Lee, the show used a 20-piece pop group to perform the original musical arrangements.

The cast incorporated seasoned Broadway performers and fresh-faced recent dance school graduates, which creator Tim Lawson said was world-class.

“The wealth of talent here is huge,” he said. “I knew Lee would be frightened, and she wants to take them to London to perform.”

As well as the 20 musical group and 28 cast members, Lawson brought a 50-person company and there were another 20 people working offstage.
